OPHTHALMOLOGY

When it comes to ophthalmic drug and device development, the BTC is the pre-clinical CRO of choice. Through a combination of state-of-the art equipment, highly-qualified staff, expertise in multi-species model development, and decades of experience, the BTC is the pre-clinical CRO to help you develop your ocular product. Our expertise spans all areas of ocular function in a variety of species. Publications authored by our scientists and an outstanding track record of study success give the BTC the leading edge when it comes to ophthalmic product testing.

The BTC has developed models for the study of exudative macular degeneration with a variety of different therapies. In addition to a staff skilled in micro-dissection of ocular samples, we provide dedicated surgical facilities for the implantation of ophthalmic drugs and devices.

Our staff are experienced in the following procedures:

  • Clinical Ocular Observations (MacDonald-Shaddock)
  • Retinal Photography
  • Fundus Photography
  • Fluorescein Angiography (FA)
  • Auto-fluorescence
  • Indocyanine Green (ICG)
  • Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)
  • Electroretinograms (ERG’s)
  • Oscillary Potentials
  • Intraocular Pressure (IOP)
  • Visual-Evoked Potentials (VEP’s)
  • Neuro-Ophthalmic Evaluations
  • Slit-Lamp Biomicroscopy and Photography
  • Phacoemulsification
  • Ocular Ultrasound
  • Optic Nerve Crush

Study Protocols:

  • Ocular toxicology: acute, sub-crhonic, and chronic in multiple species
  • Biocompatibility of ocular medical devices
  • Ocular tissue dissection at necropsy (fine micro-dissection)
  • Radiolabeled and pharmacokinetic ocular studies
  • Neuro-protective drug studies
  • Topical treatments: contact lens, topical application, laser
  • Injectable/implantable treatments: corneal, intracameral, intraocular lens, intravitreal, periocular, phacoemulsification, subconjunctival, punctal
